Yankees starter Carlos Rodón is about to take the mound for World Series Game 2, and we happen to be joined tonight by a big league hitter who’s faced Rodón 15 times with quite a bit of success.
Rob Refsnyder is 4-for-12 with two doubles, a homer and three walks against Rodón, so we had to ask, why has Refsnyder had so much success, and is there something the Dodgers’ right-handed hitters can look for against the big Yankees lefty?
“Carlos has an explosive, sit-your-ass-down-on-the-bench type of fastball,” Refsnyder said. “There is absolutely no advantage of taking pitches early in the count against him, in my opinion. You need to gauge your swing based off your early count swings. You have to think above, and approach it from the inside, because what you think is right down the middle will end up and in.
“He does an excellent job tunneling his offspeed pitches. When he’s going well and is unhittable, it seems like the fastball, slider/cutter combo starts middle, and then the offspeed ends low and inside/back foot. If he feels you are pushing his fastball outside, he does a great job mixing his changeup in to keep you off balance and unsure of what he wants to do to you next.
“Baseball purists will hate this, but it’s the truth: you will strike out/he can strike you out in a lot of different ways! He throws up to 100 and has a good slider. You will strike out and get no results and weak contact by just trying to put the ball in play/cover everything.
“You have to be disciplined in what you’re looking for. If you chase him all over the zone, it’s going to be a long night.”
As for what the Dodgers specifically can do, Refsnyder did his own research and accurately noted that the current Dodgers hitters have a combined .198 career batting average against Rodon, but they have a .519 slugging percentage. So, not a ton of hits, but a lot of power.
“Obviously, the Dodgers have had some looks against him when he was a San Francisco Giant,” Refsnyder said. “Kiké (Hernández) and Chris Taylor have had nice results against him. I’m sure the Dodgers will lean heavily on Kiké’s advice and game planning. He’s so fun to watch during the postseason.
“The Yankees and Dodgers game planning are elite, and I’m excited to watch the chess match. Look for the Dodgers lefties to tunnel inside and try and take some chances in the right-center gap.”
