Five people are fighting for life and four people have been injured following a horror crash two-vehicle crash near a popular holiday destination.   

The crash occurred at Shute Harbour Road, in Mount Marlow, south-west of Airlie Beach, in north Queensland, at 1.08pm on Sunday. 

Six people were rushed to Proserpine Hospital after emergency services attended the scene. 

Two of those people are understood to have suffered life threatening injuries while four others are understood to be in a stable condition, the Courier Mail reports.

Three others are also understood to have suffered critical injuries. 

Nine people in total are understood to have suffered injuries following the crash. 

Shute Harbour Road has been closed in both directions and it is expected to be shut for some time.
