The body of a British man found in a Spanish holiday resort last night had a two-inch gash to the head, it has emerged.

The 35-year-old’s body was found in the holiday destination of Mojacar, north of Almeria, with police investigating the ‘violent death’.

The alarm was raised around 11pm last night after the grim discovery.

He was found near Vantanicas beach, a wide sandy beach described as ‘beautiful’ by many visitors on sties like Tripadvisor. Blood is said to have been found on the wall and floor of the unidentified spot where the body was discovered.

The unnamed Brit’s body is believed to have lain undiscovered for several hours.

Police sources said this morning ‘all lines of inquiry’ were being investigated, including the possibility that the man’s death was accidental.

One said: ‘The autopsy will be key here. ‘All lines of inquiry are still open and investigators are not assuming anything at this stage.’

Civil Guard investigators are reporting to a duty court in the nearby town of Vera which has opened an ongoing probe.

Pedro Fernandez, a Spanish central government representative for the southern Andalucia region which Mojacar is part of, told local press: ‘We have to wait for the autopsy and that’s going to be very important in helping to indicate how this could have happened. 

‘He had a cut on his forehead of around four or five centimetres.

‘Nothing is being ruled out at the moment. It could have been accidental.’

Although it is not yet clear whether the British man lived in the area or was on holiday, he was found dead in a house and not a hotel.

It was also confirmed this morning Court of Instruction Number Four in the town of Vera, the court police are reporting to, is still awaiting information.

A court official said: ‘The investigating judge has yet to receive the autopsy results.’
